How are commercial millwork, flooring and painting specified and built?

Commercial millwork is usually specified to the North American Architectural Woodwork Standards, paint to the Master Painters Institute standards, and both are built to the shop drawings and finish schedule. In Hamilton, painting, floor tiling, carpeting and minor millwork need no building permit. Cruzz Construction, a Hamilton general contractor, does commercial millwork, flooring and painting, including the millwork at Vineland United Mennonite Church in Lincoln.

What standard does commercial millwork follow?

Architects in Canada usually name the North American Architectural Woodwork Standards. AWMAC, the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada, develops them with the Woodwork Institute and describes them as standards that define the requirements of material and workmanship, free to read online. The specification names the grade, and the shop drawings show every cabinet, counter and panel before anything is built.

How is millwork checked?

Against the specification and the approved shop drawings. AWMAC also runs a Guarantee and Inspection Service that inspects woodwork against the standard where a project asks for it. Cruzz built the millwork at Vineland United Mennonite Church in Lincoln to the job's millwork schedule, as millwork only rather than as general contractor.

What do painting specifications refer to?

Often to the Master Painters Institute, which publishes performance standards and an Approved Product List that specifiers use to name paint systems by surface and use. The finish schedule says which system goes on which wall, and the painter follows it room by room.

Does finish work need a building permit?

Usually not on its own. The City of Hamilton's small business permit page lists painting, floor tiling or carpeting, and minor millwork and cabinetry among the projects that do not need a permit. They often sit inside a larger fit-out that does, such as a store or an office.

Where does Cruzz do finishing work?

Across Ontario. Finishing was the scope at Ecotex Healthcare Linen Service's office in Hamilton, and Cruzz also takes on framing and drywall for other general contractors. The projects page lists the commercial jobs Dom has named.

Start with the drawings, or a call.
